FAQs

  • What is Newport Select Boys Basketball Club?

Newport Select Boys Basketball Club (NSBBC) organizes select teams for 4th through 8th graders to compete in the ETL and PEAK leagues. Players for these teams are selected through a try out process and all interested players are encouraged to participate. All try-outs are held at a local school on dates and times announced shortly after the start of the school year. Team selection is based on many factors including, but not limited to, individual player development, team dynamic, player skills, potential, attitude, and effort. Making a team one year does not guarantee a player will make the team the next year. Try outs typically are held over two days, and all players should attend both try-out dates for their grade level unless they make other arrangements.

  • How do you try out?

Tryouts are held over two evenings around the second week of September at Bellevue area gyms. There might be a cost to tryout. Tryout registration will begin in mid-August.

  • When do we play?

Practices generally start the first week of October, at Bellevue area gyms. Each team will practice twice a week. Specific days, times, and locations of practices will be announced after team placement.

Regular season games are played on weekends, typically begin in early December, and end with a playoff tournament in early March, with the possibility of qualifying for the Washington State Basketball Championship tournament in Spokane in Mid-March. Teams can expect to play 1-2 games per weekend on average, but schedules vary. Regular season games are generally played at gyms in the Eastside area.

In addition to regular season games, we may register your team for 1 or 2 weekend tournaments during the season, depending on coach and players' availability.

  • What league do we play?

Newport Select typically fields teams in two leagues:

    • ETL (Eastside Travel League), which is our more competitive and higher-intensity program.
    • PEAK League, which is still competitive but focused more on delevepment, and run in partnership with the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club. The PEAK League is often a good fit for players who are newer to select basketball or do not meet the eligibility requirements for an ETL team.

All our teams (ETL and PEAK) are coached by our paid Newport Select coaching staff. Athletes are not able to choose between leagues or teams. Every athlete goes through the same tryout, and our coaches place each player on the team that is the best fit.

  • What is the cost of play?

The cost for the 2026-2027 fall/winter season is $950 per player, all-inclusive. This fee covers the cost of your athlete's game uniform (use for the season), gym costs, league and tournament fees, coaches' salaries, practice jerseys/pinnies, hoodies or other swag, etc.
