About Us

Our Mission

The mission of Newport Select Boys Basketball Club is to provide a constructive and rewarding experience for the future student-athletes of Newport High School, through a focus on individual and team development.

We are a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth basketball club based in Bellevue, Washington. We field select teams for boys in grades 4 through 8, and our goal is to build better players and better teammates — in an environment where cost is not the thing that decides who gets to play.

One Team, One Family.

Our Story

Newport Select Boys Basketball Club was started by Bellevue parents and coaches who wanted a competitive, well-run select basketball option for boys feeding into Newport High School. For over two decades we have been finding, developing, and featuring some of the strongest young players in the Bellevue area.

The club has grown steadily. What began as a small set of teams for middle school players has expanded to serve grades 4 through 8, with the addition of 4th and 5th grade teams in 2023 bringing the program to younger athletes and their families. Our teams compete in the Eastside Travel League and, through a partnership with the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club, in the PEAK League. Our teams are led by paid coaching staff rather than parent volunteers, so every athlete gets consistent, qualified instruction.

Newport Select Boys Basketball Club was recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization in October 2023.

Today the club is run entirely by a volunteer board of parents and funded by registration fees and community donations.

Our Programs

Newport Select fields boys' teams in two leagues. Both are coached by Newport Select staff, and players are placed by tryout, not by choice — every athlete goes through the same tryout, and our coaches place each player on the team that fits them best.

ETL — Eastside Travel League

Our competitive travel program, playing against other Eastside communities.

  • Higher-caliber, competitive level of play
  • Practices about twice a week
  • Games on weekends, roughly December through early March
  • A significant commitment — best suited to players ready to prioritize the team

PEAK League

A more development-focused program, run in partnership with the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club.

  • Still competitive, with a stronger emphasis on player development
  • A lighter time commitment
  • Often a good fit for players newer to select basketball, or balancing multiple sports and activities

Season structure

Practices generally begin the first week of October at Bellevue-area gyms, with each team practicing twice a week. Specific days, times, and locations are announced after team placement.

Regular-season games are played on weekends, typically beginning in early December, and end with a playoff tournament in early March — with the possibility of qualifying for the Washington State Basketball Championship tournament in Spokane in mid-March. Teams can expect 1–2 games per weekend on average. Games are generally played at Eastside-area gyms. We may also register teams for 1–2 weekend tournaments during the season, depending on coach and player availability.

Tryouts and registration

Tryouts are held over two evenings in mid-September at Bellevue-area gyms, with registration opening in mid-August. Athletes in grades 4 through 8 are eligible. Full eligibility requirements, dates, and registration are on our Tryout page.

Cost and financial assistance

The cost for the 2026–2027 fall/winter season is $950 per player, all-inclusive. That fee covers the game uniform for the season, gym costs, league and tournament fees, coaches' salaries, and team gear. There is a separate $10 tryout fee, and the season fee is only owed if your athlete is placed on a team.

Need-based financial assistance is available. We do not want cost to keep any player off the court — families should contact us at board@newportselectbasketball.com, and requests are handled confidentially.

How We're Governed

Newport Select Boys Basketball Club is governed by a volunteer board of parents, elected by the club's membership. The board sets policy, manages the club's finances, secures gym space, hires coaching staff, and administers the financial aid program.

We publish our board roster, bylaws, and the minutes of our board and annual membership meetings going back to 2021. You can find all of them on our Board Members & Meeting Minutes page.

Our club policies — including our Assumption of Risk and Liability Waiver, Concussion Policy, and Gym Use Code of Conduct — are published on our Policies and Forms page.
