Tryout
Newport Select is the boys' select basketball club for the Newport High School community. Each fall we hold tryouts for teams in grades 4–8. This page has everything you need to try out and register — and if anything's unclear, just email us. We'd rather answer a quick question than have you miss tryouts.
2026-2027 Tryout details
Tryout dates, location, and cost will be posted here and emailed to families as soon as our gym space is confirmed with the Bellevue School District — we expect to have details in late August or September.
What to bring: basketball gear, water
Who can play for Newport Select?
Most Newport-area families are eligible. The three routes below cover almost everyone — and if none quite fit, you can still ask us.
Your athlete can play if any one of these is true:
- You live in the Newport High School boundary.
- A parent works at Newport High School.
- Your athlete attends a school that feeds into Newport High School (a school
whose students move up to Newport) — through open enrollment or a BSD choice/immersion program — and you make a one-time election for Newport Select to be your home program (see below). - Example: a family living in the Hazen boundary whose son attends Tyee Middle
School is eligible under this option, because Tyee feeds into Newport.
None of these fit? You may still qualify through another route (some private-school families do) or by league waiver. Email
board@newportselectbasketball.com — don't count yourself out before asking.
Note: ETL (the Eastside Travel League) makes the final eligibility call, based on your home address and your child's school. Our job is just to
help you get the right paperwork together.
The one-time election (for feeder-school families)
If you qualify through
option 3, here's the important part: once you elect Newport Select, it becomes your athlete's ETL home program for the
rest of
their ETL years (grades 4–8) — as long as they keep attending that same feeder school.
You can't switch programs from season to season. If your child truly changes schools later, their eligibility is simply re-checked and follows the new
school.
What you'll need when you register
The one thing to prepare is
proof of enrollment. When you register, upload
one screenshot from your school's online portal showing
all
of these in
a single, uncropped image:
- Student's full name
- School attended
- Current grade
For
Bellevue School District, go to
ParentVUE → your student → Student Info and screenshot that section. You can black out anything else (grades, ID
numbers) — only those four fields need to show.
A small number of families — private-school players who live inside a public
school boundary — also need a proof-of-address document. If that's you, we'll let
you know.
ETL and PEAK teams
Newport Select fields teams in two leagues — ETL and PEAK. You don't pick between them: every player goes through the same tryout, and our coaches place each athlete on the team that fits best based on how tryouts go. To learn the difference between the two, see FAQ.
Still have questions?
Eligibility can feel complicated, but most families fit one of the routes above without any trouble. Email
board@newportselectbasketball.com and we'll help you sort it out.
