Tryout

Newport Select is the boys' select basketball club for the Newport High School community. Each fall we hold tryouts for teams in grades 4–8. This page has everything you need to try out and register — and if anything's unclear, just email us. We'd rather answer a quick question than have you miss tryouts.

Registration is open

 →Register on TeamSnap

Where:  Tillicum Middle School Gym – 1280 160th Ave SE, Bellevue, WA 98008

When:  Monday 9/21 and Wednesday 9/23. Please attend both designated tryouts, for your grade level only, unless otherwise instructed.

Times (both days):

  • 4th, 5th, and 6th graders: 5:30 – 6:30 pm

  • 7th and 8th graders: 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early if you can, to allow time for your athlete to get checked in and warmed up.

Please have a parent or guardian accompany your athlete for check-in, if at all possible. We will have an additional release form that the league requires a parent or guardian to sign at tryouts.

What to bring:

  • A basketball (4-6th graders use size 6 (28.5”); 7th and 8th graders use size 7 (29.5”)
  • Water bottle with plain water only; no sports drinks or other food or drink per strict BSD policy
  • Basketball shoes

Can my athlete play?

Every athlete in grades 4–8 is welcome to try out. Where they play comes down to the tryout — we field teams in two leagues, and their eligibility rules are different:

ETL — our competitive travel program

ETL has eligibility requirements based on where you live and go to school. Your athlete qualifies for ETL if any one of these is true:

  1. You live in the Newport High School boundary.
  2. A parent works at Newport High School.
  3. You live outside the Newport High School boundary, but your athlete attends a Newport feeder school — through open enrollment or a BSD choice / immersion program (a one-time election applies; see below). Example: you live in the Hazen boundary but your son attends Tyee Middle School, which feeds into Newport.
  4. Your athlete is homeschooled or attends a private school — eligible by home address if you live in the Newport High School boundary.
  5. You live in the Sammamish or Interlake High School boundary — you may be eligible through a waiver (subject to ETL approval this season, so email us to confirm).

Final ETL eligibility is set by the Eastside Travel League based on your address and school — see ETL's eligibility rules for the full details. We help with the paperwork, so email us if you're unsure.

The one-time election (for feeder-school families). If you qualify because your athlete attends a Newport feeder school, you can make a one-time election to make Newport Select your athlete's ETL home program for the rest of their ETL years (through grade 8), as long as they keep attending a Newport feeder school. Otherwise, you can't switch programs from season to season. If you move or your athlete changes schools in the future, their eligibility will need to be re-checked at that time.

PEAK — our developmental league

The PEAK league is open to any athlete in grades 4–8, wherever you live — if your athlete doesn't meet the ETL eligibility requirements, they can still try out and may be placed on a PEAK team if space is available. As Newport High School's feeder program, we prioritize Newport-eligible players for roster spots.

Not sure where you fit? Just register and try out — and email board@newportselectbasketball.com with any questions.

What does it cost?

Two fees — you only pay the second (Season) fee if your athlete is placed on a team after tryouts.

$10 — Tryout fee
Pay at registration. A small fee to register and try out, to help cover gym rental and related costs.

$950 — Season fee (only if placed on a team)
If your athlete makes a team, you'll get a TeamSnap invoice — paying it accepts the spot.

Financial aid is available, reviewed privately case by case — just check the box when you register (or email us). Asking has no effect on your athlete's tryout.

Before you register

Have these ready and the form takes about 10 minutes:

  • Which eligibility route fits your family
  • Proof of enrollment or residence — one screenshot showing your child's name, school, and grade (see below). If your athlete attends private school or a school that doesn't feed into Newport High School, or is homeschooled: provide other proof of address instead. Trying out for PEAK league only? You can skip this step.
  • Your athlete's jersey size — uniforms are provided at no cost
  • The $10 tryout fee

How to get your proof of enrollment

Proof of enrollment or residence is required by the league in order to be considered for an ETL team. Trying out for PEAK league only? You can skip this step.

One clear screenshot showing your child's name, school, and grade in a single image — feel free to redact/black out anything else.

  • Bellevue School District families: log into ParentVUE and take a screenshot of the Student Info screen, which includes all the required information.
  • Private school, non-feeder school, or homeschool: upload a different proof of address instead — a utility bill or similar proof in a parent's name (account number and other information can be redacted/blacked out).
  • Don't have it handy? Register anyway — the upload isn't required to submit. Add a note in the form and we'll follow up.

Teams & placement

We typically field teams in both the ETL (our more competitive travel program) and PEAK (a more developmental-focused) leagues — see the FAQ for an explanation of the difference.

All players go through the same tryout and evaluation process with our coaches. Players and families can't designate a league (ETL or PEAK) or a team — but if a player is ineligible for ETL, they'll only be considered for a PEAK team.

After tryouts

We'll email every family with results and next steps. If your athlete earns a spot on one of our teams, you'll receive a TeamSnap invoice — paying the invoice by the deadline secures your athlete's spot on the team.
